New and Returning Student Services

Whether you are brand new to UD or a returning graduate or law student, Graduate Academic Affairs is here to be a resource for your transition.

Welcome to the University of Dayton! We have created a checklist to help you manage the details of graduate school as you begin your new life here at UD. If you are a law student please checkout the Dayton Law website for law student orientation. Regardless if you are a graduate or law student please feel free to contact us with questions as you begin your academic journey into graduate education.   • Confirm Your Enrollment
    • Once you have completed the application process and have been accepted to a program, please ensure you have confirmed your enrollment. Check your acceptance letter for the link to confirm your enrollment. Information related to the application process and enrollment can be found on our apply page or through your acceptance letter. If you have questions on confirming your enrollment contact the admissions office.
  • Contact Your Adviser
    • It is very important that you make a connection with your adviser at the start of your academic career. If you have not already done so, now is the time.  As a graduate student at UD, you need to keep in close contact with your adviser. In many cases, your adviser or program director will provide guidance regarding course registration, research opportunities and requirements, program requirements, etc. If you can not find your advisor or do not get contact your program contact UDGradSchool@udatyon.edu
  • Fund Your Education
    • Once you have been admitted to your program you can explore funding options which include loans and scholarships. There are types of financial aid for graduate students. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply for government-sponsored loans. Applicants should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year to be considered for federal loan programs.
    • There are a limited number of university scholarships and grants open to graduate students. Contact your program directly regarding research, teaching and other graduate assistantships opportunities. The campus has limited GA positions which can be found here. Once starting at UD you are  also eligible for student employment opportunities on campus. 
  • Set Up Parking
    • Parking at UD is first come first serve for all graduate and undergraduate students. Getting on waitlists for lots and parking near academic or residential spaces is important. University of Dayton Parking Services is where you purchase your parking permit. Start by creating an account. 
  • Get Your Flyer Card
    • Your FlyerCard is more than just an ID card! The FlyerCard is the official photo identification card for the University of Dayton students, faculty, and staff. It provides access to meal plans, events, attendance tracking, and campus facilities. It can also be used for "student discounts" for any where offering one.  Lastly, your Flyer Card can be used for on-campus printing and vending, as well as at select off campus locations. You can pickup your card at any time you visit or before or after classes. 
  • Visit Porches
    • All students are required to have a Porches account. Porches is the University’s intranet where we share and store important information; it is the main source of communication for the campus community. You can customize your own Porches page to manage your resources to have everything you need at your fingertips, such as links to frequently used sites, Porches channels and Porches groups you are interested in joining or establishing.
  • Navigate Dayton
    • If you plan to live in or visit Dayton, there are a number of steps to consider preparing for your transition or visiting campus. UD Housing offers graduate housing. The City of Dayton offers a number of resources on their website regarding community resources and things to do.  If you've never visited campus, checkout the campus tour and campus map to orient yourself to campus.
  • Visit The Bookstore
    • The UD Bookstore is not just a bookstore – it’s a one-stop-shop in campus for all your needs. You can order textbooks online and have them shipped right to your home. Visit the Bookstore to pick up Flyer merchandise, snacks, office supplies or gifts. The Tech Shop has everything you need for your computing needs — accessories, printer cartridges, zip drives and much more. 
  • Attend Orientation
    • The University of Dayton does offer a graduate student orientation in August and January. For more information on graduate student orientation Click Here. If you are a law student please checkout the Dayton Law website.
  • Complete New Student Trainings
    • The State of Ohio and Federal Government requires students to complete training to understand student rights, methods of reporting incidents and resources available to you. Outside of any training needed for your academic program, there are required training you must complete in your first semester. Visit the Graduate and Professional Education Canvas Page or Porches for more information.

  • Graduate Student Catalog:
    • Whether you’re wondering what classes are offered in your degree program or how many credits you need to graduate, you’ll find the answers in the catalog. While new issues are released annually, the issue published in the academic year of your enrollment governs your academic program. The provisions of the various issues of the catalog are to be considered directive in character and not as an irrevocable contract between the student and the University. The University reserves the right to make any changes in the contents of the catalog or alter the course offerings and method of instruction at any time it deems necessary or desirable.
  • Graduate and Professional Education Canvas:
    • The GPE Canvas page houses a number of campus resources and quick links specifically for graduate students. The Canvas site houses ongoing campus wide graduate student events and socials. If you do not have access email UDGradschool@shushijia.net
  • Graduate and Professional Education Porches:
    • Porches (porches.shushijia.net) is your all-access pass as you prepare for life at the University of Dayton, and it will guide you throughout your college experience. Our porch-clad student neighborhood is one of the things that makes UD really special, and we've carried that idea of community space into this site for UD students, faculty and staff. Login with your UD username and password is required for Porches. Once you're logged in, you'll access the campus wide resources and the Graduate and Professional Education Porches Site. You can also use Porches for things like:
      • Accessing your UDmail and calendar
      • Checking the campus events calendar and dining services menus
      • Reading daily campus and personal announcements
      • Tracking your academic progress
      • Updating your emergency contact information 
      • GPE Graduate student forms and resources
